Zovirax Anti Viral
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is it normal to be prescribed an anti viral medication as you are going through RVD treatment? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions here.

Similar to what Donna stated, I have been on Valcyclovir for shingles prevention daily since i was first diagnosed with MM in November 2016. I have also had the Shingrix vaccines but my specialist advised me to continue on the valcyclovir. I have never had shingles and from what I have heard I don't want to experience them.

Yes, Zovirax is an anti-viral, also called acyclovir. I also take 400 mg 2 X-ray. It is given to Myeloma patients because we are susceptible to getting Shingles, a form of chicken pox (the virus for herpies} It is the standard dose. I had a Shingles before I was started on Acyclovir and it was definitely No Fun, even admitted to the hospital in Isolation! Love, Marcia 🌸

I had it when I started RVD. Now years later I’m on it daily because of fever blisters.

Hi this is Dennis. When I was diagnosed they put me on RVD treatment . Two weeks on ,one week off with the Rev. That a 3 week cycle. My Doctor also put me on an daily antibiotic , and a antivirals 3 times a week .
It’s was a 12 cycle program . I just completed the 12 cycle treatment this passed Tuesday . My blood work is in the normal range and we are removing the Dex. the Vel. But we are continuing the Dailey Rev, the antibiotics , the antivirals along with the bone strengthening treatments evert 12 weeks .
No more weekly blood work, no more weekly chemo. Chair . I’ll be seen my oncologist ever 5 weeks . Hopefully this new maintenance treatment will be successful for a while .
This feels like I was just released from jail and walking out the front door ...
Thanks for all the support and good information that I’ve received here on mymelomaateam.com

Wendy, yes absolutely!!! Myeloma drugs and the myeloma itself make us very susceptible to shingles. So, you will probably have to take Acyclovir or Valtrex for pretty much forever. I've had both new Shingrix shots. My Myeloma specialist says to still take it. We agreed to one Valtrex daily. You don't want shingles, believe me😢 Acyclovir and Valtrex work the same. Valtrex is more expensive. It's just the one I started with and I have stayed on it. Hope this helps💓💕💖
