Scans
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have not had Cat scan or Pet scan in over a year. Is this normal? I have had ultrasounds and various heart scans, an MRI and Neurological tests but no scans. Getting Endoscopy Monday.

John, Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉 on Remission. Your doctor will do a Pet Scan if he suspects the yMyeloma is back. They don’t do them regularly, for one reason, they are expensive and unless the doctor can justify one the insurance won’t pay for it. Now, if you had non-secretory Multiple Myeloma, that is different because they have to do either as an or a bone marrow biopsy to keep track of their Myeloma because Myeloma doesn’t show up in their blood, like it does in ours, which is how our doctors monitor us.
( Kappa, Lambda And Kappa/Lambda Ratio and they will see a M spike which would tell them the Myeloma was active) Love, Marcia 🌸

John, I think it depends on lots of things including where you are in your treatment, what your last scan results showed, and of course what your insurance will pay for. The further away from my SCT I get, and still remain in remission, the fewer tests they are doing.

John, I would definitely question this with your doctor. I will have to have PET every six months to a year as follow-up after SCT, but then my MM doesn’t show up in the blood. It may be that if your does they can track it via bloodwork, but I would absolutely get confirmation on that! Best of luck and keep us posted!

Excellent John! Maybe because you are in remission as proved in other testing they have done, your doctor doesn't feel it's necessary to do a PET scan as well. For non-secretorial MM patients, the bone marrow biopsy and PET scan are the only diagnostic tests that will prove remission. But in your case, it sounds like other testing has already indicated remission. Ask your doctor why a PET scan has not been ordered.

John, that is FANTASTIC!
I think the best word in the dictionary is REMISSION, and I know you do too. It is not a word that means we can do whatever we want though. Continue to follow you doctors orders and by all means rest when you are feeling tired. Even in remission I know when I have done more than I should.
The next best word in that ole dictionary is CURED. We have to pray that a cure is discovered soon for all of us. Hope you have a happy and very Merry Christmas .
