IgA Myeloma
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Apparently when our Syracuse doctor sent a report to our Florida oncologist, he said that my husband has IgA Myeloma. We had never heard it classified this way before, and our Florida oncologist also said that none of his tests showed that. Wondering if anyone here has IgA Myeloma and if so, what test was done to determine that?

Hi Anne, When new patients join our site I ask them to share their Myeloma story: Date of Diagnosis, (Type Of Myeloma), Stage Of Myeloma, Treatment Plan. I usually get answers to every question but Type. IgA is the Type of Myeloma. There are at least 10 different Types and they keep finding more. Healthy Plasma cells makes antibodies which defend the body against infection. With Myeloma we produces Immunoglobulins - light chain Myeloma are incomplete immunoglobulins. - 20% Non Secretory Myeloma.
Heavy light chains there are 5 Types: IgA (most common), IgG, IgM, IgD and IgE (rare) these can be either kappa or lambda. Then you have the Translocations and Deletions. When you are diagnosed and a bone marrow biopsy is done they will Stage Andy Type you. Most people want to know how bad they are Stage but just as important is is how aggressive is my Myeloma and how will it respond to one drug and not another - your Type. I have IgA Kappa! Hope this helps. If you have more questions please ask and I will try to answer. Love, Marcia 🌸

I also am IGG . I think when you are one type the other 2 show as too low. I believe this is due to the plasma cells of your lane crowding out the others. This is my understanding. But could be wrong.

Anne. It shows on my serum protein electrophoresis. Mine says IgG Lambda monoclonal protein detected. I got copies of my labs when i was first diagnosed. I had to request it. But they told me what type I was from the beginning. Hope this helps. But if you are nonsecretory. They have to look at the bmb

Immunofixation lab results showed me exact numbers. Tried to cut out personal info. Sorta. Think it was on the immunoglobulins A/G/M.
