I have stem cells collected and stored since May 2018. Waiting for transplant. Do I have to get a dental Clarence done?
I have had 2 stem cell transplants and the first one lasted 4 years and the second last 5-6 years so they worked great and was able to resume a fairly normal life except I do not have the stamina I had before.
I had my SCT in March. Ended up in hospital for 3 weeks for small bowel obstruction. resolved now but still with stomach issues that I never that I never had before. Drs said the SCT worked and nave MRD. (Very minimal). Have continued on 3 chemo drugs. Will get another bone marrow biopsy in December and go from there my strength seems to be returning but very slowly. Remaining isolated from everyone and everything except immediate family which is hard at times. Certainly do not want to get COVID! Appetite is very decreased and food tastes strange. Dietician recommended multiple small meals throughout the day which seems to be helping. It is definitely a journey but the SCT was worth it. Good luck with your treatment and continue with updates
Yes to both questions. I was required to get a dental checkup and clearance prior to the stem cell transplant.
The stem cell transplant was absolutely worth it. I had a sct on November 18, 2015. Since that time I’ve been in a sCR and MRD negative. I was only in the hospital for 12 days. Was it easy? No, but not as difficult as I thought. The medical staff was there to provide anything needed. Would I do it again if needed? Yes, without a doubt. Hope this helps ease your fear.
@A MyMyelomaTeam Member after my SCT’s everything tasted like sawdust dry and powdery and now the week after my monthly chemo everything tastes tinny but appetite is still good. Yeah you won’t have much of an appetite so eat several small meals a day and drink boost plus try too eat softer food. It will get better over time so have patience. The one drawback was it made my teeth go bad and have had several ground down too the gum because the cancer did a number on my teeth and I went from zero cavities too nine cavities and my teeth keep breaking off in chunks. The cancer dentist said no teeth pulling or drilling into the jaw and don’t go back too your regular dentist until you get the ok from the cancer dentist. Hope it goes better for you, good luck.
