I see a Retinal Specialist now. I had partial post vitreous detachment. I was seeing flashes of light. It was easiest to see in the dark.

Not a strange question at all — vision changes can actually be one of the ways myeloma first makes itself known, even before treatment starts.

One MyMyelomaTeam member shared that they noticed something like a shadow or curtain across their vision, which eventually led to their myeloma diagnosis. So yes, eye and vision symptoms can be an early sign. Myeloma can affect the eyes in several ways before treatment even begins, including:

- Protein buildup in the blood affecting circulation to the eyes
- Direct involvement of myeloma cells in eye tissue
- Increased vulnerability to eye infections

It's really important to report any vision changes — like seeing stars, flashes, or shadows — to your oncologist right away. They may refer you to an ophthalmologist who is familiar with myeloma.

There's also some research suggesting that myeloma cells can hide in the eyes, so keeping up with regular eye exams is worthwhile throughout your journey.
