Members rallied around someone managing edema alongside stage 2 multiple myeloma treatments, fractured vertebrae, and nephrotic syndrome, offering both emotional encouragement and practical suggestions. Several members shared helpful tips including elevating legs, increasing diuretics, B complex vitamins, magnesium lotion, and warm water pool therapy for pain-free movement and balance. A key turning point was when the original poster visited a lymphatic specialist and learned that diuretics may not help lymphatic fluid disorders, prompting a new treatment direction.

My girlfriends convinced me to go to a pool to work out. It is an indoor, warm water pool. I discovered I can work out quite hard without pain in my broken back and ribs. The water makes me almost weightless. Plus the warm water relieves stiffness. I go 2 to 3 days a week. My balance has been so much better now. If you have a pool like that nearby, it is worth trying. I love it.

That’s a lot to deal with and I’m so glad you don’t have pain on top of it. Let’s hope your treatment work its magic and you’re right as rain in short order. Keep fighting through the treatments and keep walking. Consider joining a gym for muscle strengthening and other forms of movement exercises. Even light weight training and strength exercises actively strengthen bones by triggering bone-forming cells when muscles pull against the skeleton.

I have also had edema in the past. Doctor ordered an increase in Furosemide, two tablets every morning, and that helped a lot. Also suggested sitting with legs elevated. You are carrying a heavy load right now, sure hope this helps. Will send healing thoughts and prayers.

Thanks @A MyMyelomaTeam Member. Today, I saw a lymphatic specialist. I started having swelling in one ankle last summer and learned to give myself lymphatic massages. They helped and swelling was reduced. Then broke my back so could no longer give myself the massages, then was diagnosed with MM. Long story short, diuretics don’t help lymphatic fluid disorders. Did you know we have two “fluid” systems in our bodies? Oh what an education I’ve learned today. Anyway, I’m asking my nephrologist to wean me off of lasix (easier to spell that furosemide) as I begin to get treated for lymphatic issues.

Debbie,
I wear sunglasses and a visor in the pool. It really helps. Of course, I use a float too, since at this point I would probably drown.
