The bone marrow biopsy is the best test for MM. Blood tests don’t show MM sometimes.

Very confusing if your blood tests say it is normal why have you been diagnosis with Myeloma? I requested bone marrow biopsy as I had only been diagnosis with MGUS. The bone marrow biopsy showed I was in fact Smoldering so I would recommend the BMB to be certain as what you are dealing with.

That's a great question, and it's understandable to want to avoid a bone marrow biopsy if possible! Blood and urine tests are really valuable for spotting signs of myeloma, but they can't fully replace a bone marrow biopsy on their own.

That's a great question, and it's understandable to want to avoid a bone marrow biopsy if possible! Blood and urine tests are really valuable for spotting signs of myeloma, but they can't fully replace a bone marrow biopsy on their own.

Here's why both matter:

- Blood tests can show abnormal protein levels, kidney function issues, and blood cell counts — all important clues
- A bone marrow biopsy is the only way to *confirm* how many myeloma cells are actually present in the marrow, and to check for genetic mutations that affect treatment decisions

Even if blood results look normal, a biopsy gives a much more complete picture of what's happening at the cellular level. It's really worth having an open conversation with your doctor about why they feel a biopsy is or isn't needed in your specific situation. If you're feeling anxious about the procedure itself, one MyMyelomaTeam member strongly recommends asking about conscious sedation — they said it made a world of difference after having several biopsies without it!
