For smoldering myeloma (SMM), regular monitoring is really important since the condition can progress over time. While the exact frequency of blood tests is determined by your doctor based on your individual situation, general guidance suggests more frequent monitoring early on after diagnosis.
Here's why timing matters:
- Years 1–5: The risk of progression to active myeloma is around 10% per year, so closer monitoring is typically recommended during this period
- Years 5–10: Risk drops to about 3% per year
- After 10 years: Risk falls to roughly 1% per year Blood tests used to monitor SMM typically include M protein measurements and other markers that help track whether the condition is staying stable or starting to change.
The most important thing is to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments. Catching any progression early gives the best chance for effective treatment. Your oncologist is the best person to set a monitoring schedule that fits your specific risk level.
