For those with smoldering multiple myeloma - do you consult with a general hematologist-oncologist (hemonc) AND ALSO a multiple myeloma specialist, or do you consult with JUST a multiple myeloma specialist? I ask because I was initially diagnosed with SMM by a general hematologist, who I still see every three months to get my blood tested. But after I was diagnosed he suggested, I also consult with a multiple myeloma specialist every six months. The two of them consult with each other… read more
I agree with Paula.
I've had SMM since September 2024. I alternate every 3 months between my local oncologist & my MM Specialist.
Only because the nearest MM Specialist is 2 hours away.
I don’t have SM so I am NOT speaking from experience. I just see an Oncologist and their team. I would imagine you Can just see the Oncologist! But if it isn’t an imposition financially. I would think it’s beneficial to have them both: especially if they BOTH are willing to consult w/ each other. I am a firm believer that “ 2 heads are better than one “. It’s your health!!! Now of course if you don’t care for the current Hematologist and don’t respect their opinion. Then by all means get rid of them ! But if not and u can afford it !
My husband alternates between both and they are available to consult with each other. Unfortunately the MM specialist is the one further away. We decided that as we age, this is our best option.
I was recently asked by my hematologist if I wanted to switch to another one who wants to specialize in MM. I was unable to find any reviews of the new doctor and like my current doctor. Since I am only smoldering I figured I would stay with my current doctor and switch when and if I become MM as at the point I want someone with more knowledge. Cost is not an issue for me because I am in Canada.
Kappa,
This works well for people who don’t live near a MM Specialist. If the MM Specialist is near you, and you like and trust them, then there is no reason not to just see them. Keep in mind, when MM hits you hard, you want your doctor and treatment as close to home as possible, while still getting the MM Specialists input. Mine is over an hour away and more. I’m looking for one closer, with no luck.
