Why are myeloma patients at higher risk of infections?

People with myeloma are 7-10 times more likely to develop infections compared to others. This increased risk occurs because:

• Myeloma affects plasma cells that normally make infection-fighting antibodies
• The abnormal antibodies (paraproteins) produced don't protect against infection
• Myeloma treatments can suppress the immune system further Common types of infections that myeloma patients should watch for include:

• Respiratory infections
• Staph infections
• E. coli infections
• Fungal infections like thrush
• Gastrointestinal infections
• Urinary infections
• Viral infections including shingles

Watch for warning signs like fever, new pain/swelling, burning during urination, unusual discharge, mouth sores, shortness of breath, or chills. Contact your healthcare team immediately if you develop these symptoms.
