An autologous stem cell transplant is a multi-step process that begins with stem cell collection (harvesting). During collection, you'll be connected to an IV system where blood is drawn out, stem cells are gathered and cleaned, and the remaining blood is returned through another port. This collection process can take 3-4 hours per day for up to 5 days.

The collected stem cells are then frozen until ready for use. Before receiving the stem cells back, you'll undergo conditioning treatment with high-dose chemotherapy to eliminate existing cells. After this, your frozen stem cells are reinfused.

The recovery period is significant - it typically takes 2-6 weeks for blood counts to return to normal, and it may take up to a year for blood cells to function normally. During recovery, you'll need regular follow-up visits and tests to monitor your progress. Some patients may need to avoid certain activities for 3-6 months post-transplant.
