Yes, there could be a connection between smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) and bone problems. While SMM typically doesn't cause symptoms, it can affect bone health. One of the risk factors for SMM progressing to active multiple myeloma is the presence of bone lesions or bone damage that appears on X-rays.

Some people with SMM take medications called bisphosphonates to strengthen their bones and protect against bone damage. It's important to monitor SMM closely since about 10% of people with SMM develop active multiple myeloma each year during the first five years after diagnosis. Bone problems are a common complication of myeloma, including:

• Osteoporosis
• Bone pain
• Fractures
• Bone lesions

Given these risks, it's crucial to discuss this fall and fracture with your healthcare team, as they may want to evaluate if the SMM is progressing or if additional bone-protecting treatments are needed.
