Five years of ongoing treatment isn't necessarily excessive since myeloma management is highly individualized. While your PET scans show no active myeloma cells, which is excellent news, doctors often continue treatment because current tests can't always detect tiny amounts of cancer cells that might be present.

While your PET scans show no active myeloma cells, which is excellent news, doctors often continue treatment because current tests can't always detect tiny amounts of cancer cells that might be present.

More than 90 percent of people respond to initial treatment, and many achieve remission. However, since myeloma can return, many patients receive maintenance therapy - ongoing treatment at lower doses - to help prevent relapse. Your regular blood tests and treatment schedule show your medical team is closely monitoring your condition. If you have concerns about the duration or frequency of your treatments, it's worth discussing with your doctor. They can explain their reasoning for continuing treatment and potentially adjust your plan based on your specific situation, overall health, and response to therapy.
