the oncologist and hematologist don't quite agree on how to proceed
The answer is “Yes” and “It depends “. I was diagnosed with MGUS in 2020, then it moved on to Smoldering in 2023. I think I had MGUS from at least 2011 when my white blood cells were below normal. I have high risk cytogenetics, so I will progress to MM. Many people with MGUS do not have high risk markers. Ask your doctor what your bone marrow biopsy says about yours.
MGUS is the precursor of multiple myeloma and to get preventative treatment should be heavily considered right now according to the article in the Multiple Myeloma magazine where they discussed this issue. Talk to your oncologist about this and get an answer printed out for you to read and go over with your significant other. Do the same with the hematologist. My oncologist is also a specialist in hematology cancer. Where do you go to see your specialist? God Bless, “Teece”
