What Are The Restrictions To Follow After SCT And Did You Follow All Of Them?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Which ones did you keep and are there any that you allowed yourself to not keep? What do doctors recommend?

Hi Valeri! After I was discharged from the hospital after my SCT, both my husband and I were in 100 days of quarantine. But after my 6 week check up, my oncologist said I could have a couple visitors on my patio with masks on. Eventually was able to have more people over but outside visits only. Followed my oncologist guidelines exactly as I had been through too much and desperately wanted to get this MM under control, so no cheating by me! Thank goodness my SCT was in mid-May, so our outside back patio was awesome for us to BarBQ on and entertain when I was given the okay by my oncologist. (Glad it wasn’t winter time!) Did nice long walks in my neighborhood with my husband, which was allowed, as long as we didn’t stop and talk to people along the way. Wasn’t too bad actually as I felt I could be out and about some and entertain on our patio, so my restrictions were pretty livable!

My SCT was in April 2022 (during Covid). Also I was still in my recovery phase from my back surgery so the restrictions kind of ran together. I probably had the most difficulty with the dietary restrictions (strawberries, lack pepper and well done beef). I used common sense for the rest of them and did okay. I also recovered quickly so my transplant team loosened the restrictions a bit sooner because my labs were good. That said, I am still cautious and probably will be for eternity. I do not attend indoor or outdoor events where I can’t control the person to person distance. I no longer fly on airlines. I still wear a mask on occasion if I see that RSV, Flu, or Covid is increasing in our area.

I had a tandem transplant. After the first one I was only allowed near my car givers and advised to avoid the outside world and i had to take acyclovir since my immune system was trashed. After transplant number two, the same criteria was to be followed. 3 months after that my oncologist cleared me for work but I had to wear a mask. I'm now almost a year out from my second transplant and no mask or acyclovir. My labs are awesome and the only maintenance I do is Xgeva ever 3 months for bone density. 😁
