This site actually just published a good article about Relapsed/Refractory MM. I tried to copy link, but the site is being stubborn.

My son-in-law is a hematologist/oncologist and I just point blank asked the question. His answer was long, like most doctors, but here is what he had to say. Very few patients die from the MM itself. When all treatment ceases, our immune systems get weaker and we’ll get frequent infections, some more serious than others. One of major concern is pneumonia and/or Covid. We will likely die from complications of one of these infections.

I recently had a knee replacement and I was doing really well getting back on my feet - until I got an infection in the incision, which required a second surgery. The surgeon just wanted to make sure the infection was confined to the incision and had not gotten past the bursa into the new joint. It hadn’t. But that was more scary to me than the initial surgery, especially after my SIL’s explanation! After a round of antibiotics, the infection cleared up, only to return. I’m finishing up a second round of antibiotics while the doctors work together to consider maintenance antibiotics for a while.

Brenda, I wish you the best. You’ll be in my thoughts and close to my heart on this part of your journey.

Hugs,
Sally

CAR-T? ASCT? There are always additional treatments. If your MM is refractory to all types of chemo, then one of the above would be a good choice.

Did they offer to switch treatment? They often turn to a new type of treatment when one stops working.
