After she told me that Car-T therapy is about 5-10 years away from reaching South African shores, one of my treating doctors said that she had a patient who received Car-T in Israel. He is currently free of MM but apparently has no immune system to speak of. Is this permanent?
Hey Kate, that is a good webinar but he doesn't address your question. It does look like prolonged cytopenias are a side effect of CAR t therapy for myeloma. It can persist for years😥. The other immediate side effects are cytokine release syndrome, ICANS a neurological complication. They do neuro checks every day afterwards. Make us count backwards from 100 by 7's. 🥴 One long term side effect is a neurological movement disorder similar to Parkinson's disease. It happens in less than 5% of patients. It looks like Dr. Chari is saying we need to have CAR t before BCMA directed bispecifics because they can exhaust our T cells. Very overwhelming information. 🥺
You are right about that. 👍🥰
I'm trying to figure this out also. This Webinar has a good section on CAR t and bispecifics by Dr. Ajay Chari. I
