Steroids?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was wondering how people have found being on steroids? I understand that they can cause problems
I am diabetic and they can increase your blood sugars
They can also cause weight gain and I have recently been on a diet and lost 4 stone.
They can also affect your mental health and I have mental health problems.
They can also cause insomnia.

Does anyone have problems with these side effects or know of other side effects?

Are there any ways you have found to minimize the side effects?

I hope… read more

Thanks Barry
I am seeing my diabetic nurse soon as well.
I have had quite a few replies saying that they raise your blood sugars.
At least I will be prepared.
Thanks

Steroids do raise blood sugar. Be careful of their use. Go over with your oncologist

Hi Marcia
I am in the UK so I don't need to worry about insurance.
I am seeing my diabetic nurse soon so I will ask her about it.
Thanks for your help

Hi Toni, I have never been on insulin. My numbers did return to normal in a couple of days. Regarding testing, make sure that you get a continuous glucose monitor. It is not just because it avoids all those finger sticks, but more importantly it has an alarm when the numbers are too high. The CGM requires a prescription, but insurance should cover given medical necessity. (The nurse at the endocrinologist told me that insurance wouldn't cover unless I took insulin 3x/day. I told her that she was wrong because I had already spoken with BCBS and they had already approved based on their review of my condition.)
