Is there a risk of doing exercises or going to the gym with MM? What exercises do you do and who can adequately determine which of them are appropriate and which are not?
MM is not a contradiction for going to the gym. It is the underlying bone issues that may prevent you from strenuous exercise. You want to avoid fractures.
I spend 60 to 90 minutes at the gym - 3 to 5 times weekly. First is a mile on the elliptical (about 18 minutes) and then upper and lower strength - 40 to 70 lbs, depending on the station (across 9 stations - alternating on various days).
Planet Fitness is free to Seniors with Silver Sneakers or similar.
Hi Valeri,
I have used differing forms of developing exercise regimens since different Multiple Myeloma symptoms can require exercise that matches your capabilities. I recommend physical therapy to start if your multiple myeloma limits your physical capacity. PT can be specific to your needs. I did home exercise from my PT recommendations. I am currently working out at the YMCA which consists of treadmill walking adjusted to my capability, light weight lifting , and swimming laps. Everything is situational to your capability. Make sure you progress gradually, no pressure upon yourself. I always had some exercise in my past habits prior to Multiple Myeloma so I gauge the regimen on how I feel during and after exercise.
I hope this helps.
I did go to the gym after my remission to build back some muscle and strength. I was doing fine until one of the exercises injured my back. Now I am using a walker and going to PT hoping to get back to walking and riding the exercise cycle. Be careful what you do
I do Planet Fitness several times a week working the same exercises I did in physical therapy with very limited weight
