My husband has muscles due to his job but while doing the 12 week chemo last year I could tell he lost a lot of muscle mass. But a year later & I can see it coming back so it just takes time for your body to back there again. He didn't do anything different but took about a year to start building up again.

My local YMCA offers a free 12 week program for cancer patients and cancer survivors. It meets twice a week for an hour and a half. The first half hour is treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical, or walking the indoor track. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace and rest as often as necessary. Second half hour is work on the machines starting at very low weight and progressing as you build strength. Third half hour varies. Could be stretching, tai chi, chair yoga, meditation, nutrition, etc. I also did next to nothing for my first 5 months of induction. Before mm I golfed and did Pilates. I discovered I am terribly out of shape, but the group is small and very supportive. It is also well staffed. Check your local Y or hospital for programs for cancer patients/survivors. Many have them. Good luck. If all else fails, start by walking. Take it at your own pace.

I would say that your exercise program would depend upon any skeletal issues you have. If you have fractures that are healing or you have concerns that you might fracture something, and you want to add weight lifting, then you would want to decrease the amount of your starting weight and build up. There is a Canadian PT by the name of Margaret Martin who has a web site that specializes on exercise fir people with osteoporosis. It looks quite helpful.

Jeff, I am exercising at a warm water therapy pool. The water is easy on your joints. I am finding I have more strength and better stability.

I really like tai chi. It's gentle and works as a sort of moving meditation. As I regained strength I added weight work twice a week along with daily walks no matter the weather. I keep them all low intensity, I don't see a triathlon in my future.
