I Have Smoldering Myeloma. Treatment Is Now Available For SMM. Will I Live Longer If I Start Treatment Now?
It's your decision. Have you had any issues with your kidneys, bones, anemia, high calcium. Do you have high risk genetics? What percentage of myeloma is your bone marrow? I know it's stressful, but at least they are monitoring yours and hopefully you won't get any organ damage. You probably will live longer if your myeloma is treated in the earlier stages. But the drugs they treat us with have some serious side effects. So, that's why some doctors hold off on treatment. I am reading some smoldering patients take treatment and then go to MRD negativity and do well. Good luck with your decision. 🙏💗
What did your myeloma specialist tell you? This seems to be a controversial topic. Unless you have high risk genetics. I have read that it is better to start treatment. Otherwise, frequent monitoring, watch and wait. Very stressful either way. Hoping they come up with better staging and treatment parameters for myeloma soon.
Ray I do not know about living longer. I think you may have less damage to your bones and kidneys if you are diagnosed early. My husband was not diagnosed till stage 3 MM. He had pneumonia three times in 8 months and may have some scarring in his lungs. If he had been diagnosed earlier maybe he could have avoided the infections.
All the best Ray
I'm smoldering for 10 yrs at high risk. If you bllood numbers are good. Kidneys good, no lesions. No symptoms and your bone marrow is less then 60 percent. They won't treat you. I been at 30 to 40 percent bad cells for 10 yrs. Growing at a very slow rate. Don't rush into things. Just keep a good eye on your numbers and it's possible that you could die of something else before it gets you. This disease acts very strange. It's a case by case basis. I never took chemo yet, when the wanted me to start it 5 yrs ago. Good luck. Any questions feel free to ask. I take some natural supplements, and keep junk foods down to a minimum. Exercise, and boost your immune system with antioxidants. I don't know for sure what's working for me , but the oncologist are pretty impressed. 😁
I would definitely do the treatments if my body was strong enough to handle the side effects.
I am also between relapses, some call it smoldering mm.
I usually relapse every 4 to 5 years but i do not take a break from treatments that my dr has ordered, unless I am not well.
There are great meds and great doctors out there, you need to find the right dr for you.
If you have questions, nothing wrong getting a 2nd opinion or searching out a research center/ university where they are doing a lot of work in the field of MM.
REMEMBER, It’s your decision.
Please KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT.
