Yes, I had a rod and screws inserted. It was a huge blessing because I was able to walk again, first with a walker and then a cane. I had radiation on my thigh to take care of the cancer in the bone initially. It wasn't a decision - I had to do it! My bone is stable and now only my muscles are complaining when I walk. I'm asking them to do stuff that they didn't do for months.

One thing you don't want is for your femur to break. It has been six months since mine broke and then I was diagnosed with MM. My MM treatment is doing well but my leg seems to be a long time in getting over the break. I still have a lot of pain with each step. I'm going to PT to strengthen the muscles but progress is very slow.

It was painful for about 7 days after surgery. I was taking morphine and oxycodone. Make sure you get good pain meds if you have this done. I had a plasmacytoma in the bone. That is what caused the fracture. I still had the plasmacytoma after surgery and it was also causing pain. The plasmacytoma was cleared Revlimid, Velcade, dexamethasone and darzalex fast pro about a month after surgery. So my pain may have been worse because of the cancer.

I also had a lot of pain from the fracture before surgery. I could not use my arm for anything. The pain after surgery was a little worse than before surgery.

I am happy I had this done. It might be less painful if the surgery is done before the fracture and without a tumor in the bone.

I don’t have a fracture yet but I’m reading that there is a strong possibility if you have bone loss.
Did the recovery from the operation take long and does it cause you any discomfort?
