Hyperparathyroidism
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone on here or a loved one have this? How does it relate to our particular cancer if at all? I was diagnosed 3 or 4 years ago but got skittish about rush to get surgery. I do know that it was very important to have a surgeon very experienced in the procedure. I just thought I'd ask. I do not think it caused my present diseases but would like more information. Thank You.

Guess I might have an answer . I have End Stage Renal disease and it was caused by a combination of he advanced MM I had and the chemo I was taking . My kidneys took a big hit while I was on Revlimid . I do have Parathyroidism and it causes calcium to spill over into the bloodstream causing thinning of the bones which is no good since the MM destroys them . I have been given CALCITRIOL 0.5 mcg daily to control this . My IPT levels have been perfect since . I have been on this for 1 1/2 years .

Hi John, If you have Hyperparathroidism, it can cause many of the things that mimic MM. You probably have both. It is recommended that you have surgery. They are as tiny as a grain of rice and sit behind the thyroid and below it. The parathyroid regulates when calcium is released into the blood stream. If too much calcium is released it can harm your bones and your kidneys. Since MM is already a source for this happening a hyper release of calcium doubles your problems. I would recommend you get the surgery and pick an experienced surgeon in this procedure. Love, Marcia 🌸

The surgeons where I worked would take them out. Patients with end stage renal disease would have to have theirs removed to normalize their calcium levels. That's about all I remember. Hope you get yours straightened out💕
