My husband's oncologist prescribed Atovaquone Oral Suspension 1500 mg, for what he said would prevent fungal pneumonia. Has anyone else here had this prescribed? If so, what is your experience. Is this a one-time prescription or something that will be ongoing? There are no refills on it, and he's to take it for 3 weeks.
Acyclovir or Valtrex are given to us for shingles prevention. They do not prevent fungal pneumonia. Bactrin or Atovaquone are given for PCP pneumonia prevention.
FORGET WHAT I SAID ABOUT ATOVAQUONE BEING TAKEN FOR SHINGLES PREVENTION!
I am taking Atovaquone for prevention of pneumonia, but taking Acyclovir for prevention of shingles. I apologize, it was late when I answered your question
I take it, but only 750 ml at night, and I was told it was to help prevent shingles. I guess it could be for pneumonia as well, since they’re both bacterial.
(I just Googled it and it is to prevent pneumonia, so he’s good. I guess/hope it’s also a shingles preventative)
I’ve been taking it for several years. Doc never said there was a time limit on it, but I assume as long as I’m on chemo that lowers the immune system, I’ll still be taking it.
Its a little funky tasting at first, but you get used to it. Just tell him not to drink anything right after.
His doc probably didn’t include a refill because he wanted to make sure he could tolerate it first. Good luck!
I take Bactrim to prevent pneumonia. Acyclovir to prevent shingles. Ongoing.
My wife takes Acyclovir 2x a day for anti-fungal. So far so good, no side effects.
No, I was on Bactrim to prevent this I believe. They stopped it when my counts were pretty good.
