In general, my husband's bloodwork numbers are all in normal ranges. Total white, red, hemoglobin all good. The only odd numbers are the Lymphs are too low and the grans are too high. I know these are two types of white blood cells, but is it a bad thing to have one too high and one two low? Oncologist doesn't seem concerned, but wondering if anyone else has experienced this.
Anne, his White Blood Cells have been compromised. Normally when they are high it shows an infection, with Myeloma we want it high so we can fight off infections. Having the WBC up is a good thing. What is his Neutrophils? We want that to be in normal range to have enough Antibodies to fight off infections. If your doctor isn’t concerned then relax, he is doing good. Love, Marcia
When Greg gets his results, it usually shows the normal range versus his values. I noticed his wbc is lower than normal. it's 2.4. When I asked his doctor, she said it's the revlimid. He is taking 10 mg a day. I hope this helps.
When my immunoglobulin numbers dipped too low, I was going from infection to infection. Dr ordered an IVIG to bring my numbers back up. The neutrophils should always stay on the high side of normal. I was trying to attach an explanation of test results that I saved to my phone for easy access but I cannot send on this site. The www.myeloma.org is a good resource for this or just Google test results explained on multiple myeloma and the pdf will come up on down in the results.
Thanks Donna. That's reassuring. We did notice that the lymphs and grans were in normal ranges when he was taking his 10 Dex all at once the day after his Velcade shot and bloodwork. When we switched to taking 5 Dex on Tuesday and 5 Dex on Wednesday (based on doctor's recommendation that it would help prevent Velcade side effects) those two numbers started changing. As an experiment, for the next three weeks, we are going back to the 10 all at once on Thursday. We'll see if that makes any difference. I don't think the side effects were Velcade related anyway, because they went away after he was taken off Revlimid. I think Revlimid was the culprit.
It's all very confusing. As long as my Dr. says I am in the good range I trust her wholeheartely. She did wonderful with my husband last year when she diagnosed him him hairy cell leukemia. He had some bumps in the road along the way after 5 strong does of chemo right in a row but is in remission now and back to working and golfing. And now she is working with me on this multiple myeloma that I just found out about. Prayers and thoughts are with everyone out there going thru this. Love Carol
