I was on pamidronate for two years every three months for a total of 10 infusions. I'm heading to transplant and I need to have a tooth pulled prior. What is the risk of necrosis with the extraction? Is it the same as Zometa?

After 3 doses your risk is a lot higher . I just went through this. It has been 2 weeks and all though i am healing slowly . everything looks good so far. Although i was told in the future they will not do an dental implant. Or a bridge i will have to get a 2 teeth denture

My understanding is that Acyclovir is generally an anti-viral drug. In other words, it helps protect you from viral infections while your immune system is compromised, or semi- comprimised, while your blood counts are low, or while on steroids.

I had 1 tooth pulled before transplant . I never was told anything before giving zometa . I had to have a tooth pulled, because it had broke off a few months eariler . I had 3 Zometa treatments . They went ahead and pulled it.
Than after my transplant, I refused Zometa, because I had a few teeth that needed attention.
I told them I wanted All my teeth pulled . They said we can do a root canal . Nope ! I wasn't going to take a chance down the road and it goes bad and get a infection and lose my jaw .
Due to having 2 disc in my neck pressing against my spinal cord, they had to do it at Shands - $4062 without dentures . I finally got them pulled this pass July 2nd $2000 down and a year to pay the rest .
And I started my Zometa in Oct . .
Lol .. always a story with me .
I like to say a " testimony " .
Moral of my " story " make sure you get a clearance before doing Zometa.

Good night .

I have been on treatment for two years and I harvested stem cells after induction. I had a dental clearance for harvest but I don't for transplant because of that partial root canal. I'm going to stop the pamidronate and hope for the best. My Dana Farber doc said I can get the implant either before or after transplant but the bone has to be completely healed so if I get it before transplant it will delay transplant by six months.

Thank you. I will need an implant after the extraction.
