Overview
Codeine is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an analgesic (pain reliever) for mild to moderately severe pain. Codeine is available over the counter or by prescription, depending on the state in which you live and the strength of the formulation.

Codeine is a weak opioid, or synthetic opiate, that works as an analgesic (painkiller). Codeine is believed to work by interfering with the way the nervous system responds to pain sensations.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, regular use of opioids – even as prescribed by a doctor – can lead to dependence. If misused, opioids can cause overdose and death.

How do I take it?
Take Codeine according to directions given by your doctor or found on the medication package. Do not exceed the recommended dosage.

Codeine comes in tablet, capsule, and liquid forms.
