Overview
Belbuca is a prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat pain in cases where pain is severe enough to require daily, long-term, continual pain relief, and other treatments are not effective. Sometimes, Belbuca is used to treat chronic pain caused by myeloma. Belbuca is also referred to by its drug name, buprenorphine.

Belbuca is an opioid, or synthetic opiate, that works as a potent analgesic (painkiller). Belbuca is believed to work by altering the brain’s perception of pain.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, regular use of opioids—even as prescribed by a doctor—can lead to dependence. If misused, opioids can cause overdose and death.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Belbuca should be taken exactly as prescribed by the physician.

Belbuca comes in the form of a buccal film that is placed inside the cheek until it dissolves.
