Discontinuing Revlimid And Starting POMALYST While On Maintenance Therapy
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Due to a recurring itchy body rash developing when using Revlimid, I’ll be switching over pomalidomide with velcade and dex. POMALYST is 10 times more potent than that of lenalidomide. But what I’m reading, people seem to have less side effects although it’s in the same drug class. For those who are on POMALYST, what has been your experience?

Thanks !

Angie, I agree with Jamie. The things this provider is telling you doesn't sound right to me. I'm on Pomalyst because Revlimid didn't work for me, plus my counts were always low on Revlimid. A second opinion might be a good idea.

Hi Angie, our treatments can cause shingles. But myeloma and just getting older can make us prone to shingles as well. I have had both Shingrix shots and I take Valtrex every day. I had shingles before I was diagnosed. So painful. Don't want them again.

Does revlamide cause shingles ?
With my recent outbreak of shingles the nurse told me revlamide could have caused it course I had shingles before I was diagnosed with mm and noticed any caffeine of any kind like chocolate tea coffee I don’t drink any sodas and they contain caffeine also energy drinks all would aggravate and cause another outbreak but in reading on chemo and shingles I see where everyone is given 400 mg of acyclovir to keep from getting viruses and most of the time this works but in some cases it doesn’t. In my case I have a lot of added stress my moms old house turned into a rent house constantly things are breaking needing repairs ac units washer dryer termites and electrical problems so I have managed to disconnect from all that finally and keeping caffeine out of my grasp by not buying any cause it’s a great temptation to me but to eliminate all stress in your life is hard but a must to be able to survive with mm.

And would they themselves take a drug that made them feel this horrible for 21 days only resting for 7 ?? I kind of doubt it!!!

Today I did mention polmalyst to my nurse practitioner and she said they have to stay with revlamide because it was the golden standard for treating multiple myeloma and polmalyst was not as good or strong. It’s crazy that they will not budge on this issue at all and forces me to only take revlamide as I can tolerate it which is way less than the 21 days. My only hope is that my treatment is still killing cancer cells and keeping mm at bay.
Nurse said she sent referral to mda for sct today so that’s a good thing!!! Hopefully now I can get a second appointment to do sct at mda in Houston.
