Has Anyone Had Total Knee Replacements While On Treatment For MM?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

The ortho surgeon says I need both knees replaced. My oncologist son-in-law says the MM and the treatment I am on make me very high risk and says I shouldn't do it. I have just gotten to a place where I am fairly active and feel like I have a decent quality of life with MM. Now this.

Your son in law is looking out for you. There is a bigger chance for infections with knee replacement than hip replacement. Also a bigger chance for blood clots. Also, they probably want you off therapy before and after surgery. I personally wouldn't be able to do that without my myeloma going crazy.

Have you tried the injections where they put some kind of fluid in the joints to cushion them. I have a friend who needs knee replacements but has gotten these for quite a few years. They have helped her tremendously in avoiding the surgery.

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to answer. I have had the injections and they have helped. Nothing is simple when you have MM, there is so much to consider!

Hi Sally, I see a physiatrist(he’s the one that caught my MM) for my arthritic knee. He thinks it best I do everything I can to avoid knee replacement as I love to ski(yes its a slight risk, but I’ve been on skis since 5) and although I know many people that ski after a replacement, it can be limiting. So I have had the gel injections and they have helped. I also work on building up my quads and the surrounding muscles. I also dropped some a little weight. I should add I have no damage to the ligaments surrounding my knee so that is helping too. I’ve also seen a PT and she was helping me build strength.

Good luck with making your decision and I hope this information helps.

Have a nice evening!

Sally,
If you have it, make sure they monitor your brain when you get anesthesia. It will help you not get too much and you will feel great afterwards. Ask your son-in-law what the risks are. Is it infection, anesthesia? You have to decide if the risk is worth it.
