I Was Wondering If Someone Out There Had Both A Stem Cell Transplant As Well As The Car-T?
A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have been in treatment for 4+ years for Multiple Myeloma and had some short-term successes or remissions. I had a stem cell transplant a few years ago with only a very short-term remission (4-6 months). This was very disappointing. I am now supposed to go into a clinical study for Car-T. (Not the one the FDA just recently approved, but a stronger one). I was wondering if anyone had both and could compare the two? I thought the stem cell transplant was awful and I am not looking forward to this… read more

I had a SCT in March of 2021 and the cancer came back at my 3 month check-up. Very discouraged because it was a long and tough process. I then signed up for a clinical trial for CAR-T. Had the CAR-T this past December and am doing well as of today. I did have some complications with CRS and my blood pressure got really low (normally on the low side). It’s hard to compare the 2, because I had so many lesions and a couple plasmacytomas that the CRS was going to be an issue for me. I did stay in the hospital longer with the CAR-T, but was not as tired, and food still tasted somewhat good. No nausea or diarrhea with the CAR-T. I was nauseous after the SCT (Mephalan). I wish you the best and would recommend the CAR-T.

I had no reactions with Stem Cell the treatment before getting stem cell was harder than Car T no chemo involved or chewing of ice for 4 hours. Your immune system is not killed off for Car T. Your T Cells are removed the same way that they do for stem cells. My first week of Car T went well no reaction in the middle of my second week I got a high fever and was given intravenous antibiotics. Fever came down after the second day and I was discharged about 3 days later. I returned to the hospital because I got a partial palsy of my face which after several tests was resolved as a swollen facial nerve which cleared up after a week. Due to the intravenous antibiotics, I also got C Diff and was put on another antibiotic to clear it up. So far good and in remission

Tammy, Healthtree.org posts the side effects of CAR T. You will want to read up on the one you are getting and weigh your options. There are clinical trials and other new drugs you could try as well😍

I wish you well. That can’t be fun but if it works it is worth it. Scary tho! Prayers
