Coming to the end of my induction therapy and a stem cell transplant is up next. I will have to travel out of state. Looking for insights - while making arrangements, what should you have considered that you did not? How common is chemo as part of the harvesting phase and was it done inpatient? How badly did it wipe you out at first? How long were you inpatient? How long did you have to stay near the transplant facility? How long did it take for you to start feeling "normal?" Did you… read more
Yeah the chemo before the SCT knocks the hell out of you for quite awhile and everything tasted like sawdust too me.
Tamara, I was inpatient for two weeks. There was no Covid so hubby took my clothes home to wash. Yes the techs bring you ice and protein drinks, I mostly did Gatorade. You have to have a private room. Loose tops are good or button front and yoga pants. They will need to get to your line. I got diarrhea. So I took depends. But they have them if you need them. You will meet with a social worker and financial person. They will help you with logistics
Because the MM came back and since I gave enough SC’s too go twice that was their advice. I was told that they cannot cure MM and it will keep coming back but there are advances in MM everyday so I just take one day at a time and live like it could be my last because nobody knows when MM will win and you could die from something else.
I took nupigin
for a month before my transplant and was really fatigued for several months and after my first SCT it took a year and a half before I felt normal
and after my second SCT it was a year before I felt normal so it is a long hard row but beats be dead. It takes time too heal.
I had the transplant in January and was 4 weeks in hospital as i kept getting little infections. The high dose chemo prior to transplant strips the lining of your digestive system. Very difficult to keep food down. If you can try mono eating, eg mashed banana or a banana smoothie made with aloe Vera juice or just juiced ripe pears. I ended up being fed intravenously as couldn’t eat and the hospital didn’t have good food options. But my spirit was strong and when I got home I took no meds, used anti nausea wrist bands and eat bananas , steamed potatoes and leeks for the first week. It takes your gut a while to heal. But I got there and my hair has grown back 😀
